OS4 🙂
1
Some 68xxx programs work better with emulator than run directly from AOS4.
1
It mostly works and I can experiment easily
1
Easier to record videos of programs and games running in AmigaOS 4 with sound. Good for quickly testing if something works.
1
Being able to bring my Amiga environment, especially YAM, on travels using my wife's laptop (Thinkpad P50)
1
In WinUAE: emulating Classic AND PPC at a decent speed with various emulated graphics cards. GUI Composition under uaegfx with title shadows etc. Implementing a HD via directory. Easy to add boards and expansions.
In QEMU: Speeeeed. Easy to compile for special needs, "modern" ppc cpu emulated...

1
OS4 on a laptop is nice.
1
the only way to use AmigaOS 4.x
1
The possibility of running AmigaOS 4 under a classic Amiga (Amiga 4000 which I will probably never own). I was able to see in this way the differences between os4 on a classic machine and my x5000.
1
I don't like emulation. having to run a host system to use amigaOS just bugs me. I still don't like the Win ecosystem at all, and WinUAE seem counterintuitive to use and too much overhead.
On macOS I used OS4 a couple of times, but there are limitations and constraints when using keyboard shortcuts and some software does not work anyway.
Besides macOS feels so much like amigaOS in so many aspects, ideology, keyboard shortcuts, customization. And the newer Mx macs are so fast, so power modest (in terms of power consumption), so small, that a rational thinking person wouldn't even bother to turn on an AmigaOne. But I'm much less rational than I would like to be. 😉
1
Easy portability
1
difficult ... there were so many obstacles to overcome which shadow the positive things. Most positive is probably the use of not as expensive hardware .. but thats it.

What was your biggest frustration with AmigaOS 4.x under emulation?
140 submissions
It's hideously slow compared to real hardware, and is rather buggy and crash prone.
1
Slow speed.
1
Installation
1
Inability to copy files normally (UAE), speed.
1
There's nothing like my X5000 with supported GPU; no emulated environment will ever match it
1
It is too slow. Not in Workbench itself, but when using more demanding software.
1
Speed, but not a big problem for my usage.
1
No 3D support, no ATI card emulated... Installation process not for beginners, you need some experience.
1
gfx slowness
1
Several games do not work.
1
Driver support. 2D is not enough for me. My slow 10yo PC hardware.
1
Limited resources under WinUAE.

Every time I use AmigaOS under emulation i am thinking why they go to power pc and not to the x86 architecture so we can run it natively.
1
No evolution of the emulator.

1
It’s not as responsive.
1

1
It’s to slow.
1
In addition to the above, the graphics capabilities were limited.
1
Not as fast as real hardware, but much better than when it first came out.
1
Performance isn't great.
1
The slowness of execution.
1
Keyboard shortcuts not being accessible (the ones with Left, Right Amiga key), it disrupts the workflow.
Besides that, AmigaOS should become more flexible regarding shortcuts. e.g. a preferences utility to switch Right/Left Amiga Key (especially because of the cut, copy, paste), ans some shortcuts should be reassigned/re-thought.

And on the same level of frustration: Graphics integration. e.g.: not being able to run all software (all the new titles using modern graphics cards)
1
Missing gfx card support (i.e., the lack of composition) and the limit of available memory (this is mostly a WinUAE problem, since it's emulating classic hardware. Qemu might be a better solution)
1
networking (solved meanwhile), graphics and of course no real hardware.
1
Network problems and sharing stuff between windows and os4
1
It's fiddly to set up, there are still rough edges.

Limited to CSPPC levels of performance. My real OS4 machine in an AmigaOne XE G4 800MHz with 512MB of RAM, so the reduced CPU/RAM is very noticeable and makes the system difficult to use.
1
Not be able to use the full power of the hardware virtulazation or a simple RTG driver for the host gfx-card etc.

no modern gfx drivers support (no ogles2, no gl4es, no accelerated video).
1
Graphic drivers without any form of acceleration
1
Slow speed, terrible sound, slow graphics.
1
In practical use it would be that FS-UAE, which I use on Linux, cannot use folder drives with PPC mode. To share data I must boot OS3, copy it to a shared HDD image, quit then boot OS4. As opposed to 68K where I can simply attach a folder for use as a drive and copy stuff directly to it from Linux.

I use AOS 3.x under emulation
1
Purchased my PPC system in 2004 and do not know if emulation requires a different version of OS4.
1
Emulation offers less features than the PCIe capable hardware and is likely to be slower than on the x86/64 hardware I currently own.
1
Time constraints

It must be a finish complete soliution.. ready to install and go.

I didn’t know you could
1
I prefer physical hardware, I don't like emulated hardware at the moment, there is currently no emulated hardware with powerpc cpu that works as it should, a lot of time is lost in configurations and then sudden crashes of the operating system.

Not an AmigaOS 4.x user
You obviously have some interest in AmigaOS 4.x, or you wouldn't be reading this. What would make you try AmigaOS 4.x, and/or start using it regularly?
115 submissions
Nothing. It's pointless. Nobody needs anything better than Workbench 3.1. Amiga OS is just die hards trying to cling on to the 1990's.
1
Modern OS features (memory protection, 64bit), stable apps, support for common hardware and all that for free. Linux already gives that to me so no reason to use AmigaOS 4.
1
I'm always curious about all Amiga things and try them out and I do own a Pegasos 2 with AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS installed. But my Amiga 4000 with OS 3.2 is just way more fun and I don't see how AmigaOS 4 could ever get close to that - to me it's just boring, it's AmigaOS but stripped away of a lot that makes it special (like all the old hardware) and in its place came outdated versions of what everything else has (like a 3D-API from the mid 2000s).
1
it have to be compatible with normally Amiga Hardware
1
If it would emulate it properly, right now it's nowhere Amiga HW
1
A simple comparison page, showing the difference between AOS 4 and 'Classic WB', not an 'I'm better than Classic' more of a here's how you can use it; does AOS support WHDload? can I run classic apps natively? I *think* you can connect to the Internet with AOS4 but there are no good browsers(?), so, > 1) build/host/fund/kickstart/manage a TCP/IP stack for all platforms 2) build/host/fund/kickstart/manage a modern browser

Hardware. I have never seen Release 4.x in action, only read about it (for the last two decades or so). I've pre-ordered the Amiga 1222, but AmigaKit haven't updated the official A1222 homepage for over two years so I don't really know what to think any more.

It is too late. I need modern hardware with normal pricing.
1
I have it loaded on winuae but i never use it at all. Amikit w/3.5 is good enough for now.
1
Reasonable cross compiler environment available for linux x86
1
Availability of good price and good performance powerpc hardware
1
Have used it on x1000 (sold). Finished OS 4.2 that really uses all hardware, with all stable drivers, Timberwolf or similar a bit updated browser and Libre Office - all that was promised at x1000 launch
1
I bought it but NEVER installed due to lack of hardware/software.

Updated BIOS to allow me to use newer graphics cards on my X1000 plus OpenOffice/LibreOffice available. Good browser would be handy too.
1
I would try it if it was released for 68K Amiga computers. I would use it on my Vampire based Amiga's. Not interested in PPC based machines. Not real Amiga's as far as I'm concerned.
1
Availablity on standard hardware (x64 or - considering the duration of development - better ARM), larger amount of software, either native (dreaming, I know) or through a rabbit hole-like solution.

All in all highly unlikely, sorry.
1
If it became ahead of MorphOS one day, I might consider using it again. But it has fallen too far behind technology-wise, support-wise, update-wise ... Maybe in another ten years it will be on par again, now that some lawsuits seem to be settled.
1
For me Amiga is a retro Hobby, so I'll stay with OS 3.x on native Motorola 680x0 hardware.
1
Decent web browser with support for hardware h264 decoding and webgl

Used to enjoy OS4 on my AmigaOne XE when Oddessy was up to date.

As a webdeveloper I would be interested in newer hardware should there be a usable browser.
1
If it would be able to run on affordable HW with proper speed (emulation or not).

1
Much cheaper hardware...
1
I don't have PPC hardware (only an incompatible Mac Mini G4). Classic PPC acelerator is not an option for me and actual PPC hardware for the 4.x is quite expensive for a simple niche use. I considered an emulated environment via WinUAE but I haven't find motivation for doing so
1
I have Amiga OS 4 for my Amiga 4000, but it is to slow for productive use and too unhandy (not portable). Running OS4 within WinUAE/QEMU on a Laptop could be interesting (already using MorphOS on a Powerbook G4).
1
no, OS4 in 2023 is full useless operating system
1
Emulation
1
Much, much more frequent releases and bug fix updates, or even better - open source the whole thing so that people can actualy be bothered to contribute.
1

Having a real AmigaOS system again.
Reading about this survey, though, perhaps I'll test the AOS4 emulation path to check SDK environment.

If there was a pre-packaged compatability layer, like QEMU, which I could pay for, I would. I would love to explore OS4 but don't have time to hack arround with things as I did in my youth !
1
If it ran on PC hardware and completed with Windows/Linux software.
1
Nothing, it's a dead OS with shitty software ports that I can run much better, on Linux or macOS or Windows, and a total waste of time overall. I'll happily keep on using AmigaOS 3.x however,
1
68k amiga compatibility
1
Make AmigaOS4 run on ARM (like Raspberry Pi) *and* free
1
Availability of a good speed, accelerated, budget-friendly option (either HW or SW). Right now, all options are either way too expensive (X5000) or slow (emulation without any accelerated graphics).
1
As a BSD license, and professional programmers program the contemporary software for the operating system.

A laptop version
1
When it will come in a small package (OS & Hardware) on a small price, like 120 euro (max).
1
I don’t have the time to try it out or the hardware
1
It costs a lot and what is new does not come anyway.
1
Affordable laptop or perfect easy setup emulation
1
Make make a raspberry pi version
1
Ported to a hardware platform with a future, mainly ARM. PowerPC is dead. I know what I use my Amiga OS 3.x based machines and emulations for. I don't know what I would use AmigaOS 4 under emulation for that I don't already do and do better with Linux natively and there is no way I would by anything PowerPC. A pre-packaged Linux hosted emulation that looks transparent and takes little to no configuration or searching for roms and files to configure UAE with QEmu might be something I'd be interested in buying like I have OS 3.1.4 and 3.2.
1
I'm using older OS (A500)
1

1
If it was open source and portable to other architectures
1
A backport of the entire OS to 68k to run on Amithlon.

1
If it was fast enough under emulation I use it regularly, but development on it seems to be dead, so better off sticking with OS 3.x.
1
Software to use on it
1
a laptop
1
More modern relevant software.
1
I have already bought emulation software and OS4 for classics.
I will try it when I get time.
I would also like to buy a ”little bit cheaper” PPC hardware.
I used to own a PPC OS4 Amiga before, but lost interest in it due to lack of progress.
1
Hardware available at decent price
1
First of all, it would need a LiveCD or media of AmigaOS 4.x to be able to try it. Buying one of the various versions for different platforms is no real option, last but not least the development being spread across different companies with no clear path of where development is heading is another showstopper.
1
3d modélisme software
1
I wanted something more modern than OS 3.9 - unfortunately, the compatibility was tertible, I couldn’t even get WHDLoad to work.
1
Cheap hardware.
1
I only use original authentic hardware.
1
Availability of affordable hardware to run it on
1
Faster emulation that allows more memory
1
Software support to make it usable as daily computer, not just for fun. A up to date browser as a minimum. Secondly the hardware should be more available (affordable and ideally as a laptop)
1
new hardware is a start but the backend of Ben Hermans would really turn my head
1
Obvious; cheap available hw, browser, cross platform dev technologies: java, .net...
I.e: so i can use it daily and do not need a pc. I know it is a different league ... but Apple does it well.
1
A 64-bit version of OS4
1
If it would be stable, could support more RAM, had memory protection and updated internet programs
1
If there were affordable (<$400 USD) modern (currently manufactured and available, with standard USB and HDMI/DisplayPort ports for modern displays and peripherals), dedicated (not emulated), performant (native/full speed) hardware I could run it on, and if it weren't a commercially unsupported dead end OS.

I would use AmigaOS 4.x if 64-bit AROS were renamed as AmigaOS 4.3 and Hyperion were removed as its owner.

Given the unlikelihood of that happy outcome in this fallen world, I'd have to see AmigaOS hit a need I actually have. It would have to run on hardware I could actually own and rely on -- it doesn't have to be x86; I'd be OK with Raspberry Pi. It would also have to be something I could contribute to: open source the thing.
1
Run on Mac PPC or Amiga 68060 based classic hardware. Emulation would be nice on Raspberri pi or something. I don’t run it because I do not have any way if running it. I’d love to try it out.
1
New affordable hardware or dedicated laptop
1
Aos 4.x native on Raspberry Pi.
1
Make it compatible with old macs, or change ISA.
1
Software Development.
1
Maybe an OpenSource version
1
If it was ported to a more affordable platform. I love the Amiga, and was a die-hard zealot until 2000, but it is not viable for my day to day work at this price point.
1
PPC hardware lacks 68k Amiga compatibility while lacking modern affordability and performance. AmigaOS 4 is missing many modern OS features, lacks non-68k software and has minimal development and support. A more compatible 68k AmigaOS 4 is interesting which is where AmigaOS 3 is headed even though I refuse to buy either product. I don't like unethical Hyperion/Ben or EOL emulation so there is not much chance I will ever "try AmigaOS 4.x" and zero chance I will ever try a PPC only AmigaOS 4.

The graphics.library of AOS4 should be updated, and the memory (RAM) handling of X5000 optimized. Also UAE included with AOS4 should be renewed!

It's pointless. Develop software for real Amiga's with Workbench that everyone can use instead of living out your fantasies with machines upgraded to ludicrous specs. The Amiga died with Commodore, they are the last true Amigas.
1
Hope QEMU gets more evolved graphics cards emulation (ATI/3D or Voodoo). Like to play with AmigaOS 4.x and hope to start to learn some coding on that platform.
1
an emulated machine will never broke with acid battery or short circuits. Time after time it will be even faster due powerful host computer
1
We need more developers for AmigaOS 4 and we should think about how to achieve this.
We from Amiga-News.de try to push it by publishing tutorials about SDK, QEMU etc.

Runs great in most areas, very litte feedback on future Updates
1
Focus on one GFX card, focus on one cpu, focus on one soundcard for faster and more stable development. Let's go to the X64 era, a MorphOS browser on G4 isn't about speed 😉
1
own hw makes the amiga real, i do nearly anything with it. the other things with chromeOS. win only arduino things

Make Amiga great again
native code, Hardware, doesn't matter it requires a cpu switch....it must be supported native...step by step...PPC, ARM, Risc-V.....native support for topical and forthcoming archtectures is the best way into a better future...emulation doesn't crack the shell to make Amiga a serious player again and of course a decent business plan....please keep in mind, what all the efforts are for...To provide modern technology, to expand userbase, to bring back developers to the platform who left years and decades ago...to make cash...AmigaOS still has remarkable features...please cease that fucking Microsoft and Co. dominance...We need fundraisers, to get enough to cover the costs of serious development...There are Amiga enthusiats out there, who would die for that, who would fight the last man standing...please keep in mind....
1
i wont go back to real hardware because of the incredibly bad price/performance ratio. but i hope the os4 development will continue
1
Looking forward for AmigaOS drivers for qemu virtio-gpu to get a fully accelerated experience
1
As a former Amiga user I'd like this to live on and be able to sometimes use old software for nostalgy and preservation. As a hobby I don't want to spend too much or anything on it so using and emulator is fine and AmigaOS should be open source for a long time now. It's a pity some selfish people still fight on who owns what instead of letting everyone to enjoy this.
1
For me, the emulation is just a gimmick and can't be used for serious work
1
Running on real hardware is much faster and has more eye candy. But native hardware is seriously lacking in modern applications: PDF viewers, browsers, office suits. This makes it very hard to look up digital reference material without a second PC/monitor.
1
Good thing that it can be emulated nowadays but I think people already stopped caring once that finally happend.
1
I like AmigaOS4 very much, the unfortunately ill-loved continuation of AmigaOS3. It has most of the things we ever wanted on Amiga. As long as there's no proper IDE on the platform, I'll stick to Jetbrains + cross compilation and use emulation when I'm not close to my X5000.
1
i can't use it
not with normally A500/600 Setup and not with 68020 Turbo Accelerator
1
Really appreciate your continued support Hans, and firmly believe that OS4 has great potential as a hobbyist OS! Looking forward to the 'suits' getting their act together. Good leadership is essential for bringing developers and users together.
1
Ideally I prefer using my X5000 but my current space work/circumstances have me leaving the X5000 off.
1
Thank you for supporting AmigaOS4
1
AmigaOS 4.x should run on x86-64 and/or ARM
1
I would like to adapt the RX graphics cards to the UBoot and a new Amiga OS 4 version or update.UAE It will probably no longer be possible.
1
AmigaOS 4 is a fantastic experience on the right hardware, which at the moment is really only the X1000 and X5000. Anything less is simply too slow. Even on our fastest x64 kit emulation is no replacement.
1
I do not see that this OS would be really maintained and updated. If it would be easily possible to use it with QEMU, I would be interested again. But this seems also to be a nightmare and one would need to buy 3 different versions.
1
What version of OS4 is required for emulation?
1
Seed
1
They are dated. You need modern hardware such as running operating systems such as Windows
1
For the x5000 uptodate firmware bios exec etc would be welcome and aos4.1 more updates also,

On of the biggest handicaps for Amiga OS4 is the price, and price to performance ratio of the Power based hardware it runs on. The only future options seem to be the Open Power Notebook which will have similar performance envelope and pricing to X1000 and X5000. The other option is the Raptor Blackbird which was at least comparable to similar priced x86/64 hardware when it was first released but no longer is and the pricing has increased substantially.

If emulation offered the same features and substantially faster performance I would probably buy dedicated hardware but ultimately I'd prefor to run native on a different architecture. Arm is atractive because it is bi-endian allowing for an easier transition and porting of current software but you would still run into the same problems that plague big endian OS today. The other option would be to transition to LE and break all compatibility at which point x86/64 would probably be the better match. Puplic information suggest that PA6T can operate in LE mode meaning X1000 could be used as test bed for such an endevour. Emulation seems to be the only viable option for moving away from dedicated PPC hardware, with other options likely requiring finances and man power that just aren't available.
1
I believe having a way for more people to use it and even try it is beneficial for the OS without the need to spend thousands of money.
1
Nothing
1
Everything should be: 1.st SharedSourced to insteresed parties, 2. OpenSourced after 6 month 1 year, 3. Hw & Sw Libred (Gnu Gpl 2 Licence), after 6mo-1y ; to stop legal confrontation of commecial enterprises involved in A-OS, M-OS, ArOS development, as well hw connected to it
1
unavailable HW, difficult to set and for a normal mortal unavailable emulation
1
I've been begging Steven Solie to support QEMU has a native platform. I have some experience with virtio and the magic it can perform. Given we are 100% stuck on PPC for the next 5 years, the only viable way forward is QEMU. I've recently placed a Radeon card in my PC to attempt to use PCI-PassThru to accelerate AmigaOS 4 GFX. If that all worked, I think we could find a viable compatible modern laptop, and with enough offload work, I think it would be faster than our X5000's.
1
We need more 2d/3d drivers in one simple package, for all latest gen OS4 hardware!
1
OS4.x only on real HW, nothing else!
1
I would _love_ to have a modern Amiga running Release 4.1, and I would tremendously love getting back to C development for the Amiga (albeit on PowerPC hardware). That's why I really, really hope that entry level hardware will be available as soon as possible.
1
I am a firm believer in the potential of the A1222 for mobile usage, (despite the power drop I bring this instead of my X1000 for parties) now it's time to get it out!
1
Would like to see the OS being brought over to something like Orange Pi. Natively, that is. More affordable and will therefore create a bigger chance of attracting more interested people.
No x86! I'll bail out immeditely!
1
Not reale
1
It is lagging more and more behind, USB periph. etc etc
1
for the love of god all I want at this point is **someone to finally take control** of the official developemt line. one company who can release a roadmap and have a truely functional dev portal w/bug tracking. i'm fine with two seperate os' (3x & 4x) the two will never merge and in the long run 3x will always be the most successful. how could it not? 100x the new hardware and software development at prices people can afford. i wish 4x good luck but when it finally makes its transition to arm it will be dead. and that's not a bad thing...
1
I want a ppc laptop
1
Only emulation, eveything else is too old and without any sense
1
Please make a port of AmigaOS for x86(or ARM)
1
Do software better, and try to pick less strange and expensive hardware choices 😀 Maybe port to ARM if x64 is too complex due to lot of drivers possible? Improve WarpOS, OS3 compatibility, instead of Xena maybe license FPGA SAGA chipset from Apollo?
1
I need a OS4 Notebook. Real hardware or emulation.
1
Thanks a lot for all people who make this possible!
1
Would like to buy a laptop tjat vould run OS4 native.
1
my main comment would be emulation works as there is plenty of affordable hardware but to me not the same as runninbg on an os4 machine
1
I had one of the fastest 3000s 25 years ago and traded it for a windows machine which never showed up. Plus the ppc is a DEAD end.
1
need some cheap hw solution NOW!!!!
1
No acceptable Hardware available,
1
Please port to x86!
1
Hardware troppo costoso, Amiga OS4 dovrebbe sfruttare l'hardware al 100%
1
Please develop AmigaOS 4.2, I want to buy it.
1
Yes me would be happy if it will scource above
1
X1000 is a fast and capable machine.

1
As an X1000 user, I‘m a bit frustrated that there’s still no multcore support. Also still no major software releases like LibreOffice. I‘m very happy with the new Radeon HD drivers, though, wishing for more software to support it, but this is getting better, I still believe…
1
I would use emulation more if it could match more closely the experience on PPC hardware.
1
I have OS 4.1 for Classic Amiga but it stopped working? Has it been fixed?
1
Amiga one x1000
1
Its fast but not finish. we need browswers and modern software.Ram ist esay to expand and the 2 gb limit ist obsolot.. Were are the multi prozessor acces.?
1
Nup. I've had my rant.
1
Would be fun to try, but sticking to X5000
1
A HUGE Thank You to everyone involved! I appreciate you all.
1
It’s frustrating that there is no affordable hardware around and emulation is much to slow slow or complicated setup (Qemu). There’s also no Pegasos version to buy, I only own the Final Edition.
1
Would love to see some more work done to get videos working a little better on the X1000. Either with the HD cards or perhaps fix CFE to work better with the RX cards.
1
Amiga OS4 is a "classic OS" as much as 3.x -- it is over 20 years old now and has not changed significantly in all that time. Preserving it via emulation is the best fate that it could have, given that it has been several years since hardware was reliably available.
1
bring it to another Hardwarw
1
The emulation of OS4 is not as efficient as for example an emulation of OS39 on 1200, the latter being almost perfect.
1
Something small for on the go with Amigaos 4 it would be great
1
oh.. I already answered most of this in the previous questions.
If PowerPC chips are not available anymore, I hope Trevor will have the strength an desire to jump to something else. hopefully not x64, mostly for historical reasons but also because it will be dead end too soon enough. There are chips out there which support both, big and little endian.
I have to say these arm/Mx chips are really powerful, but maybe Risk-V is the way.
I'm sorry for all the mishaps with the Tabor/A1222. If it really comes out one day and ONLY IF I have the spare, I will buy one out of sympathy for him to cut losses.
1
Emulatzion makes the most sense. Dedicated hardsware is just too expensive.
1
I love real hardware and especially the NG hardware, but I don't like the disfunctional reboot on RX radeons and hence am stuck using HD radeons for a working reboot.

in general i'D love to see actual development on OS4 again as its kinda stuck at the moment. BUT!! I'm not believing in the way a-eon takes to create yet another AmigaOS clone.
1
Pegasos G4
1
Leaman must be go
1
I tested it but switched to Linux for my daily work.
1
It seems that developement of OS4.x has stalled since some time 🙁
1
Go risc-v I'd say.
1
Emulation might be a good way forward atm since moving to new HW platform is out of the question, I guess.
1
I used AmigaOS4 with Sams, but the system is very expensive, buying the updates, the drives the program with updates, etc.
1
I'm pretty happy with OS3.9, so I'd need to have an easy inexpensive path to upgrade to OS4x.
I'm not sure if it would be much of an up-grade though.
1
I still use it on classic blizzardppc. and I really like it.
1
broad hardware support would be necessary, x86-64 or ARM
1
The OS is in dev deadlock and seriously bugged. The "official" hw is way overpiced and bugged/unsupported. Emulation is a bit silly imho, but seems to be the cheapest way to experience OS4.
1
Emulation is the best way to try OS4 - some of us can't spare half year salary for an X5000. 🙂 Although I also have a nice Pegasos 2 (with G4 1266 MHz), emulation is realy appealing for me, because this hardware can die anytime and there is not comparable replacement for a reasonable price.
1
I think it's time to migrate to ARM and make the next major version of OS4 run natively on the cheap and plentiful RaspberryPi.
1
No
1
AmigaOS4 will only survive under another CPU family so hopefully a emulation gateway is a good step in such transition...
1
It works
1
Need more new versions
1
As long as real Amiga hardware is available, I'll continue to use that. But given the very limited availability of new X-class machines, emulation may one day be necessary, at least until more hardware becomes available.
1
waiting for 4.2
1
I like it a lot, unfortunately development seems to be stopped. So many years without new versions / updates
1
Can't wait to have dedicated hardware.
1
Only native AmigaOS4.
1
Port to x86 or arm please
1
Its great
1
The AmigaOne X5000 is the best Amiga NG.
Unlike its predecessors, it has no chipset problems and has performance comparable to modern systems.
As much as I like emulation, having a real Amiga is the most rewarding experience.
1
I assume OS4 to run smooth on X5000, but the hardware is a little bit too expensive for me (hope to win the lottery to buy a X5000).
1
no
1
Faster!
1
emulation
1
when I bought my x5000 - the OS4 and especially the browser were still somehow modern, the outdated browser and lack of office-programs is biggest problem... haven't actually updated the latest updates even as the browser is so outdated 🙁
1
For all practical purposes, emulation is the only real option today. Optimize drivers for virtio, let OS4 run virtualized on Linux even on PowerPC.
1
Love the combination of classic Amiga feel together with modern hardware and especially ability to use modern hardware accelerated GPU (RX590)
1
none
1
Multiple user accounts would be nice.
1
Where is the A1222?
1
Patiently waiting for OS4.2 😉
1
Emulation needs to get faster.
1
Love Amiga
1
I'm 100% a real hardware guy much more than an emulation user. But prices and availability makes decisions harder.
1
We need more serious programs.
1
AmigaOS is a little known system, the prices of the machines are too high, but with emulation you can provide an experience similar to the original
1
hardware best, but having emulation for portability is good too, and you can run it on x86/64
1
I don't know.
1
is ok but cannot replace real hw
1
Running OS4 on a "cheap " hardware solution would be my wish. Like on the Raspberry Pi or similar.
1
impossible to even try without hardware thats actually for sale.
1
hardware
1
Emulation is the only affordable way forward I guess.
1
Love it, but a properly designed Workbench makeover would do it the world of good
1
Have only tried OS3.2 and use Pimiga regularly.
1
Anyone that buys hardware to run AmigaOS 4.x is a sucker.
1
Tried it under emulation, it's nice but it just seems like a less useful AmigaOS3.x (no native game support), which could be acceptable under ARM without Amiga chips, but it's unacceptable under Classic hardware, it should be able to run 68k programs natively on the original chipset + 040/060
1
Better speed, hw extensions.
1
It seems OS4 is stuck with PPC architecture which is on a life-support and used only in embedded projects (and this is also diminishing). I also don;t see much of the development going on atm.
1
As a commercial, proprietary operating system, and the outdated hardware and software, working with this system is a waste of time. Competitors are Microsoft, Linux and BSD.
The BeOS "Zeta" is much better than the OS4.
1
Emulation is superb and can enjoy my Amiga software for my years to come..
1
x86 hardware support would be nice 😉
1
Wishing list:
Have AmigaOS 4.x running on the AMIGA 500 ΜΙΝI
https://www.amazon.com/A500-Mini-electronic-games/dp/B09CM1C3LX
1
Let Arm or Risc V emulate Power PC. Port Amiga OS 4.x to 680x0, Arm and Risc V?
1
Thanks for your effort
1
AmigaOS 4.x.x looks Great.

Otherwise No comment
1
I think AmigaOS 4 would be a great fit for RPi boards and other similar systems where the hardware is known and static between revisions and can be targeted. I also think it could run well on boards a couple generations old now where linux is maybe a bit too slow and bloated.
1
we need a proper browser for it.
1
I would Amiga OS 4 to be ported to the Raspberry Pi platform.
1
The Peg2 emulation via QEMU is very good, and apart from the boot delay (Peg2 issue, not QEMU) is good for general use. Cross compiling in Linux/Windows and testing in QEMU speeds things up, however if there were OS4 virtual drivers for gfx/3d/network etc to work with QEMU then there could be a new OS4 release for virtual hardware.
1
I currently use updated Amigaos 4.1FE,
I started using commodore hardware from 20 years until today with more modern hardware with powerpc cpu , I love using AmigaOs4.1 because it gives me a sense of freedom , art , expressiveness , and it is always in tune with modern times , it is full of colors, I define it as a computer that transforms technology into art,
You can transform your desktop as you want, you have many configurations available many applications to customize your Workbench.
Currently in the updated Amigaos4.1fe there are many applications with bags and for this reason you will get crashes.
If there were more targeted and continuous updates over time it would be very nice.
!!!!!!! Otherwise it's great to use Amigaos4.1 !!!!!!
1
PPC is dead, time to re-embrace 68k
1
I liked AmigaOS 2.x
1
Only use AmigaOS v3.x under emulation; "bare bones" or AmiKit. Don't own OS 4.x.
1
Lack of new hardware is one problem, disappearing support for older hardware another. I have sam 440ep Flex.
1
Nothing beats running an OS natively. If cheap enough hardware arrives I will buy
and start using it again.
1
Seems that development of ESP, Official AOS4.x and System54 has stalled. Feels like AEON / AmigaKit have given up on the Amiga NG dream and shifted focus back to classic market.
1
i need to used under emulation
1
Hyperion / AEon should finally come up with a strategy where AmigaOS 4.x is going.
1
Hardware
1
My Sam460 fells much, much faster than emulation (to a point). CPU emulation seems to be fast, but overall system is not very responsive.
1
I need to get back on working on GDB for AmigaOS 4.X as having a debugger would be such a boon
1
Nothing to add
1
Old PowerPC macs are available and cheap - bring back moana.
1
Hyperion is also thinking in this direction.
I think with some volunteering work it can be a new product for them.
1
I prefer real hardware
1
Make "inexpensive" hardware or improve OS4 in terms of emulation
1
It will be hard to replace real hardware (maybe focus on the PowerPC notebook).
1
AmigaOS 4.x needs a modern fully featured browser to be more attractive to prospective users to be taken seriously as a modern successor to Workbench and classic Amiga hardware.
1
I try to plant public Fruit Trees instead!
1
New hardware is way more fun. If I just wanted to play old games emulation would be my go-to.
1
Emulation needs to be fast enaugh to be usable on medium spec. hardware (since thats what I got atm)
1
AMIGASYSTEM
1
The emulation is a more accessible option, for a hobby system.
Simply few ppl. have tons of time for such a hobby (if they can spend time inside a browser , on a social network - using a mainstream computer). Will they buy a new HW? Questionable.
... talking abt the former AmigaOS devotees (myself)!
1
Given the lack of hardware and, when it appears, its cost, emulation is the way forward. AmigaOS 4 should be promoted with emulation in mind. Emulation should be renamed "virtual machine" to be more in tune with the greater "market" so that non-Amiga users understand better what it means and, maybe, oh maybe, get interested.
1
Someday emulation will be good enough , but currently it is not.
1
Some new hardware would be nice
1
OS4 should be ported to x86_64 if it's to survive.
1
I think it only can survive in emulation. Real hardware is too expensive
1
I really love what OS4 has become. Like everyone, i think we need a more modern browser
1
AmigaOS 4 on real hardware is better.
1
Under emulation, being I am using UAE, I am aware it is limited to Classic Amiga. My laptop has an i5 and while not exactly Ryzen level, it is decent enough to run OS4 comfortably and probably runs at about the same kind of speed as the real thing would have. This also brings with it inherent limitations of emulation such as having no ability to accept USB drives or any direct access to external ports. However, there can be positives to this emulation model, such as OS4 Classic being the only hardware that can still run GDB, even though that is a somewhat esoteric example.
1
Hardware is too expensive
1
Want an ARM or x86 build!
1
Without affordable and available (currently-in-production) hardware to run it on, it's pointless.
1
VERY GOOD
1
Dump ppc and go Arm Rpi hardware is affordable for all
1
Is 4 needs to support more platforms. I mean morphOS supports mac ppc and I run that. I’d rather run os 4 on anything just to use it.
1
OS4, the last true alternative in computing
1
Os4 should be ported to less expensive hardware that has a future. It could allow many more people to try before the buy.
1
I believe in dedicated HW for running AmigaOS and programs.
1
I'd like to boot directly into AmigaOS.
1
Hardware cost too much and it's outdated. No Multiprocessors and still 32 bit
1
Native and Open Source
1
It's dead Jim. Even as lack of competitive hardware declines into EOL emulation, at least 68k emulation offers better compatibility and performance while using fewer resources. A 68k AmigaOS 4 would also eventually fail without affordable 68k hardware while non-68k hardware lacks adequate 68k Amiga compatibility to attract a large portion of the Amiga market.
1
